A rare antique 19th century cast iron Rod of Asclepius apothecary trade sign c.1880.

This wonderful and well cast wall mounting trade shop sign is formed to represent the rod of Asclepius.

According to Ancient Greek mythology the Demi god Asclepius wielded a serpent entwined rod, and was believed to have healing powers.

This reference to the Greek God of medicine was used from the fifth century as a sign to advertise the trade of early medical practice such as an apothecary.

Still used now this symbol of the serpent wrapping around a rod or staff has become so well weaved into modern society, as a visual representation, of the practice of medicine and aid.

This well proportioned and good quality sign would have been affixed to the wall outside the entrance to a 19th century apothecary shop in France most likely.

With traces of the original black painted surface, the metal surface showing a time worn patina.

Measuring :-

39.2cm high

14.2cm widest point

2.2cm deep

With three small fixing holes, no signs of damage or repair.

We have not been able to find anything similar on the market, making this a rare find and certainly a desirable addition for a collector.
