Code: 10208
Dimensions:
An antique 19th century 'Rat de cave' wrought iron candlestick.
Rat de cave or cellar rat candlesticks were used to illuminate French wine cellars in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Their design with the 'rat tail' like handle was hand forged, which allowed for these spiral candle holders to be hung on to wine cages, barrels etc.
With its central corkscrew spiral design allowing for a candle to be held within. The candle could then be lifted up as it burnt down with the use of the lifter which simply sat below the candle.
The spike to the base sits into the turned hardwood base when not being carried. This made for a very useable functional item in everyday French life.
A wonderful primitive decorative piece which can still be used as originally intended.
Ideal for a rural cottage interior.
