An antique late 19th century taxidermy zebra hide dressing screen
Code: 10171
Dimensions:
A beautiful Victorian era zebra hide single fold dressing screen / room divider.
Given the quality and time period of manufacture, the screen is likely to be the work of either Rowland Ward or Edward Gerrard & Sons. Both of these famous taxidermists were known for producing comparable pieces of work.
Produced in a time when the passion and interest in the natural world was at its pinnacle. The exploration to far off lands instilled the desire for the exotic pieces of interior decoration, with some encorporating zebra hide.
The screen is constructed from the hides of two individual specimens, mounted to a timber frame, with ornate brass hinges. The orignal woven fabric to the backside is still present.
This wonderful and unusual piece would work well as a room divider, or as a background for a natural history display.
Dimensions:
Total height - 164cm
Extended width - 203.5cm
Width when folded - 101.2cm
Panel height - 159.5cm
Structually sound and ready to use.
With some age related wear and tear, with parting to the hide in areas which reflects the age of the screen.
The tears to each hide occur as the hide dries out and natural weaknesses or smaller areas of damage expand over the many years.
Some of the original upholstery tacks lacking.
No signs of worm or rot.
