A late 19th century taxidermy Lepidopterology display in hinged pine case. Circa.1880.

Housing various antique pinned butterfly specimens, this old natural history collection was discovered amongst the personal effects of an academic from York.

The specimens are certainly showing their age, with losses and deterioration but still charming none the less.

Collecting and studying insects, was very popular during the 19th century, following on from the increasing interest in the natural world. Entomology and in particular the study of butterflies and moths (Lepidopterology) became a worldwide fascination. This cased collection would have been collected and pinned during this time.

The vast array of preserved butterflies each with their own individual wonderful colours and wing patterns make for a great display piece.

The original hinged pine case can be folded fully allowing for hanging on a wall.

Case measurements when closed:-

Length - 40cm

Width - 27.8cm

Height - 8.5cm

Specimens are as shown, with age related losses, the pins appear well fixed.

We can ship the case but would need to state some losses to the specimens should be expected given their fragile nature and age, please only request shipping if you are happy to accept these terms.
