 - SERICULUS CHRYSOCEPHALUS -

A late 19th century taxidermy study skin of a male Regent Bowerbird.

The Regent Bowerbird are mostly found in the rainforests on the east coast of Australia, with the male of the species displaying the more exotic plumage.

A 'study skin' was so called as the specimen was only preserved and not mounted to create the illusion of being alive. Instead a study skin or cabinet skin as they are also known, were produced purely for identification and classification studies. The birds once preserved in this manner would have a classification label attatched and were then stored in specimen drawers in museums and universities.

During the Victorian era whilst naturalists were on expeditions it was common place for rare and exotic specimens to be collected in the field. As they would need to study the birds for long periods of time and to ensure the specimen did not perish, it would require preservation for ongoing observations.

Study skins have become very popular and sought after additions to naturalist's collections, along with adding vibrant colour and interest to a wunderkammer / cabinet of curiosity.

This is a rare survivor and a very collectible specimen. Part of the original paper label can still be seen affixed to the bird's leg.

As the listing images illustrate, the specimen's plumage is still vibrant and shows little to no loss at all. Overall the study skin is in very good condition.
