Two antique 18th century oil paintings on copper of Homer's Odyssey
Code: 10205
Two wonderful antique late 18th century continental oil paintings on copper.
Each illustrating scenes from the epic ancient Greek poem, Homer’s Odyssey.
One painted copper panel depicts Telemachus and the nymphs of Calypso, while the other is Apollo helping Odysseus.
Telemachus can be seen carrying his spear, accompanied by his two dogs, and bathing to the right within the scene are the nymphs of Calypso.
In the other image the Greek god Apollo is seen holding Odysseus, who has been shot with an arrow. Apollo’s bow and harp lie on the ground beside him.
These diminutive paintings could have possibly been part of a larger series of works telling the full tale of The Odyssey.
Each image is both charming and intriguing, when closely inspected details of the landscape are revealed. With beautiful dark tones.
The ancient Greek theme makes these very desirable, and their small size ideal for any interior.
Each panel set within an emerald green and gilt frame.
