An original antique 19th century Irish painted pine Sugan chair.
Found in historic green paint which has worn back nicely, allowing small glimpses at the timber beneath.
This is a desirable rural Irish chair with typical through-wedge construction.
The cerise rope woven seat panel contrasts nicely with the painted finish.
These wonderful chairs were once a familiar sight across Ireland, with their name coming from the Irish word 'súgán' meaning straw or hemp rope.
This type of ropework was used in the construction of the chair seat. Traditionally they would be made by the man of house, sometimes for children, although often adult size examples like this one were made.
The way the seat was constructed althought simple in appearance, is certainly well thought out. Its unique design makes them very hard wearing, as the weight of the sitter pulls the joints of the chair together.
Its long life of use is well illustrated in the visible wear to the cross stretchers.
It leans and twists slightly, which only makes it all the more charming.
This is a fantastic example, showcasing the art of Irish Sugan chair craftsmanship.
