An interesting pair of late 19th century antique pine campaign packing case cupboards
Code: 10391
Dimensions:
A matching pair of late Victorian / Edwardian campaign packing cases, most likely used to house campaign chest of drawers. Both constructed in thick pine with a dark grey / black painted finish.
Each of these heavy duty pine cases is hand painted with the original owner’s name W.L. DUNNING, and its intended destination of Port Sudan.
The initials C.D.C are also present.
A paper shipping label is affixed to the top of both cases, the label reads HENDERSON LINE, CONTOMICHALOS, DARKE & CO. LTD. PORT SUDAN. The hand written inscription on the designation section reads as Liverpool. This would indicate their return journey back to the United Kingdom. It would be a fair estimation that the hand painted letters C.D.C to the front of each case are the initials for the aforementioned shipping company.
This could therefore indicate the cases and their contents belonged to a senior member of the company. Therefore it is possible the matching pair of wooden cases served for the transporting of furniture across the sea, without the usual military ‘campaign’ connection. Could they have served for military use previously and then been reused? This is all very possible as often cases were reused, but now this is only conjecture.
These are now sought after as they serve incredibly well for storage within the home. The ability to stack the two or use individually gives good flexibility. Used stacked within the kitchen they become an ideal double cupboard, likewise split and used as individual statement bedside units.
Each case has developed a good honest time worn finish which illustrate their travels overseen, and long life of service.
Both are fitted with extensive iron reinforcements to offer protection whilst in transit. They also have iron carry handles to allow them to be lifted and carried. There is evidence of their once being an internal shelf in each which are no longer present.
Dimensions:-
Total height - 120cm
Width including handles - 119cm
Depth - 55.5cm
Each is structurally sound, showing a lifetime of extensive use, with age related wear. Small losses as illustrated. The interior shelves lacking.
One small historic repair to the bottom back corner of one case.
One case with two historic metal strap work repairs.
The left hand side iron handle on both cases are damaged as illustrated.
