An attractive English Queen Anne antique four panel oak coffer, dated 1707 and carved with initials S.S.S.

The period oak chest is of nice small proportions, with four panel top and front.

With incricate hand carved decoration, which incorporates the year it was made, along with three initials, possibly signifying the owners or alternatively the maker of the piece.

The chest opens on original iron hoop hinges, and is raised on four stile legs.

The oak has developed a good warm colour and honest time worn patina.

It is well constructed with peg fixings and is fitted with nicely formed moulding.

There is evidence of a historic attempt by someone to gain access by force, which has left it's marks around the lock plate and to the front edge of the top. This damage has become well rounded and gained a lovely dark patina. This illustrates that this activity happened a long time ago indeed. Certainly a charming and interesting detail, along with others the coffer has to offer.
