A charming antique King Charles II boarded sword chest of simple joined construction.

Made from just six individual oak boards, each hand sawn,  with five of the boards primitively nailed together, forming the box, The six board is hinged on top, forming the lid.

The two end panels are fixed with their end grain running vertically and run below the main body of the chest. This design feature helped to preserve the contents of the chest from both damp and vermin.

These wonderful primitive boarded chests historically have also been referred to as a coffer, although strictly speaking this term refers to a domed top chest, made by a ‘Coffermaker’. Coffers would have been covered in studded leather or cloth.

This particular example is quite diminutive in scale, and nicely carved to the front with scrollwork. The year of its construction 1677 was also documented within the carved decoration.

To the interior is a traditional simple lidded compartment, also known as a till. This would have originally been used to house smaller items or valuables. A simple iron lock plate is fitted to the front. The series of notches to the edges of the front board is a common form of decoration on furniture from this period, and would have helped to protect the vulnerable end grain from damage.

The dark colour, elegant decoration and age of this chest make this a wonderful storage option for any period home. An equally both primitive and charming piece of country house funriture.
