A beautifully carved 17th century English antique oak boarded chest.

Simply constructed from six planks of hand sawn solid oak. With five boards primitively nailed together forming the box, and the sixth board being hinged forming the lid.

The two end panels are fixed with their end grain running vertically and run below the main body of the chest. This design feature helped to preserve the contents of the chest from both damp and vermin.  The traditional feet of the chest are formed from the a v-shaped cut in each panel.

These wonderful primitive boarded chests historically have also been referred to as a coffer, although strictly speaking this term refers to a domed top chest, made by a ‘Coffermaker’. Coffers would have been covered in studded leather or cloth.

The chest has extensive decoration to it's front with two deep carved lozenges, each with a central rose head. Each corner is futher embellished with budding flowers and leaves.

With iron lock plate and original hoop hinges.

The top also has concentric lines carved to each side.

A wonderful example of a boarded chest from this period, making for a useful and decorative storage option for any period home. An equally both primitive and charming piece of country house funriture.

Some historic warping to the timbers, this is also expected for a piece of such considerable age.

Two metal spacers present to base of one end panel.

The interior 'till' is not present, this appears to have been taken out.
