An antique Victorian mahogany Bookbinder’s book press table
Code: 10222
Dimensions:
A wonderful 19th century Bookbinder’s press table, raised on square legs which splay outwards at the base.
These slightly unusual legs are a design feature to better distribute the weight of the heavy cast iron press, which would be sat on top of the table, making a sturdy base for the Bookbinder.
Hand built with peg construction, with two drawers to its front, each with two large turned wooden knobs.
Without the heavy press the table can be now used as a well-formed side table, an ideal bedside or lamp table.
However, with the addition of a period book press added this would be fully useable once again as it was originally intended.
Constructed in solid hardwood timbers, with great time worn colour and patination to the top.
The finish to the two pairs of drawer knobs is inconsistent with the pair on the top drawer finished in a golden shellac. This is all part of the table’s character and could signify the lack of matching handles when it was first constructed.
Dimensions:-
Height – 74cm
Width – 58.3cm
Depth – 40.5cm
Drawer internal dimensions:-
Height: 6.3cm Depth: 25.7cm Width: 38.5cm
Overall a good sturdy table which is ready to use.
With age related wear and evidence of use.
Historic fixing holes to the outer part of the legs, this is from the table being fixed to the floor.
A small surface crack to the rear of one leg, which does not affect structurally integrity.
Minor loss to underside of one drawer knob as illustrated.
