A 19th century antique Irish hot steam sauna chair made by Ellis & Co Ltd.
Fresh to market after being sourced from a manor house in Northern Ireland.
Constructed in solid pine, this innovative piece of furniture allowed the user to take hot steam saunas in a seated position.
The design incorporated two doors giving access to the height adjustable seat inside.
Once seated the doors would then be closed, the front upper section is made to allow the person's head to remain outside. Another ingenious feature are the two drop down port hole style openings. These allowed the user to sit and read a book or newspaper whilst enjoying the steam.
Obvioulsy at the time of construction during the latter part of the 19th century a piece like this was cutting edge technology and certainly only attainable to the wealthier members of society.
Origianlly a hot steam feed would have been connected to the wooden cabinet.
The original makers oval brass plaque is still affixed the front of the cabinet.
Certainly an uncommon find and even more so in such original untouched condition. A perfect piece for high end spa, or hotel.
