A wonderful 19th century Welsh box settle with panelled backrest, and scumble painted finish. West Wales, circa 1880.

A charming example of Welsh vernacular furniture, with a simple single lift up panel to the seat.

The settle is found with the original scumble paint in tact, which remains in surprisingly good condition. With only minor chips to the seat and backrest, the years of hands rubbing over the well formed arm rests has produced a great patina.

Well constructed in pine, the settle has a very solid feel, and is a pleasure to sit on.

To the front panel is a key escutcheon which tells us that the seat panel could have been locked when originally constructed.

The settle is quite diminutive and ideal for even the smallest of cottage interiors.

With good provenance, the settle was purchased in 2018 by the previous owners from Drew Pritchard in Conwy. Proof of sale is available upon request if required.

This certainly stands out from others on the market and showcases the wonder of Welsh box settles from the 19th century.

The beautiful hand applied golden brown paint really elevates this from the plainer examples, which are more often seen.

This would be a great addition to a cottage kitchen, with the storage within the seat section perfect for boots, toys, etc.
