An interesting and unusual 17th century and later English oak settle, which after extensive research appears to be a one off in its design.

English delft tiles from London dating to the early 18th century have been inset to the top of each of the uprights. Both of these blue and white tiles are fixed into place with timber strips held by nails.

The ‘bones’ of the settle are certainly 17th century, with the makers initials and the year 1678 carved in the centre of the backrest. The tiles would have been a slightly later addition along with some historic repairs and alterations during the 19th century.

With panelled backrest and deep carved moulding all showing a lovely time worn patina. Hefty deep curved armrests and a well used seat panel give character to the piece.

The original peg construction is clearly visible, along with the areas which have seen repair or strengthening over its long life.

The settle is a very good size and would easily seat three.

The colourful and bright delft tiles really help to lift the overall dark aesthetic of the settle, making this example really stand out from the crowd.

This would make a fantastic seating option in a period cottage hallway or kitchen.

The settle is very sturdy and fully usable as intended, the historic alterations clearly ensuring the longevity of the piece.
