A wonderful highly ornate solid oak coffer of grand proportions, with profusely carved five panel front.

With deep molded rails and recessed panels and of peg construction.

Dating to the latter part of the 17th century, with each of the panels decorated with floral depictions, bordered by s scrollwork, and wheat head intersections.

The coffer is impressive in both its scale and presence.

The well-rounded and time worn carvings have become ever so tactile.

The oak has developed a stunning deep colour, with its extensive life of use showing in the wear to the feet and other high contact areas.

Unusually the top is pine but does appear to be part of the original construction given the wear and colouration being in line with the body of the coffer. The dark almost black stain to the back of the carcass is also present to the top, and one of the original hinges which is affixed with blacksmith forged nails joins both pieces together, as appears to have always been this way.

If the top is not original then it certainly has been present for most of the life of this grand chest, there are several areas where the knots in the timber of the top have naturally worn to an almost glass like finish, which illustrates the timbers age.

A truly remarkable piece of English 17th century furniture from the Yorkshire region. Certainly an exquisite piece of storage for a cottage or country home interior.
