A scarce huge early 19th century pine barrel back tavern settle. Circa 1820.

Fresh to market, this incredible barrel back settle was sourced from the West Country and measures almost 7 and half foot wide.

Well constructed in pine and still with its original painted finish. With sloping top and hefty armrests to either end.

The old brass hooks still present on each end panel are a lovely detail. These would have been used by patrons to hang up their hats and coats while they enjoyed a drink. A lovely insight into how this settle was used for many years.

This is a very comfortable and cosy example of a Georgian Cornish tavern settle bench. Found in lovely dry dull finish, with areas of wear which have revealed the wonderful grain of the timber.

A real showstopper so to speak, certainly not a size that comes along too often, especially in such lovely original condition.

Very large settles like this make for amazing focal points for large cottage interiors, rural pubs etc. Given this is particularly wide, it will easily seat 4 adults comfortably.

Dimensions:

Height - 180.1cm

Width - 226.5cm

Depth - 43cm

Backrest height - 122.8cm

Seat depth - 34cm

Seat height - 44.5cm

Seat panel width - 214cm

There are two historic iron strap reinforcements to the two back corners as illustrated.

The central support is original to the piece, and ensures the seat panel can bare weight given how wide the timber board is.

Found in original condition as you would hope, with age related wear and tear.

The painted finish as mentioned has worn back in areas.

Structurally sound, and ready to use.

Some evidence of very minor historic non active woodworm, this is very localised to the base of some backboards, edges of some boards to the front,  and the back bottom edge of the centre support. Given the settle's age, you would expect to see far more than the piece exhibits. (Worm damage has been treated for peace of mind).

Minor 'mop rot' to the base of some boards.

Overall the settle is found in surprisingly good condition considering its age and the life it would have had in a tavern.
