Code: 10401
Dimensions:
A wonderful and rare antique Elizabeth I 16th century West Country boarded oak chest.
Simply constructed throughout from thick oak boards.
The side panels with traditional v shape cut away supports. The presence of the distinctive crossed saw marks to the apex on these panels is commonly associated with West Country furniture, from this period.
With the original forged iron hinges still present and remarkably still operational.
The oak has developed both good colour and patina throughout.
Considering the chest is approximately 500 years old, it has survived this extensive period of time incredibly well, being still structurally sound.
It is certainly a privilege to be able to handle pieces from this period, which have survived relatively unscathed and still remain usable to this day.
There are historic signs of the chest being broken into a long time ago. The lock plate and iron clasp to the front are lacking, suggesting the chest held items of considerable value. The areas where the iron work would have been fitted has well worn back, developing patina and adding character to the piece.

The lid sits slightly out of alignment with the box.
Historic cracks and losses.
Signs of minor historic non active woodworm. Considering how old the chest is, the effects of woodworm is surprisingly little.
Minor paint splashes to the back of the chest.
One hinge has lifted in one small area from the lid, this is from the oak shrinking and drying out over the 500 years since its construction. The hinge is still well attached.
