A rare antique Belgian Obiit hand painted funerary hatchment
Code: 10299
An early 20th century hand painted funerary hatchment panel. Originating from Belgium where they are known as an Obiit.
This particular panel is one of three we have available, each individual and made to commemorate the passing of Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier (1851-1926).
Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier (1851-1926) was archbishop of Mechelen and Catholic primate of Belgium for twenty years, from 1906 until his death in 1926.
These Obiit have a beautiful aesthetic with the individual artist’s hand giving each a unique look.
A popular decorator's piece for interior design use, with its dark heraldic look a great addition to a curio collection.
We have three available, each will be listed individually.
The panel is constructed from simple heavy board. With painted surface. With a single hole to the top to allow it to be suspended.
The panels would have been suspended from public buildings, in particular chapels and churches, as a sign of respect when the Cardinal passed. They would have been visible when the carriage carrying the cardinal’s coffin passed through towns and villages.
Dimensions available upon request.
Some minor age related wear and tear. No signs or repair or restoration.
