A rare antique 17th century James II elm barrel back tavern settle
Code: 10266
Dimensions:
A quite rare provincial antique James II tavern settle of diminutive proportions, and of barrel form. Circa 1680.
Originally from a public house in the Lake District.
This beautiful and early example of an English tavern settle, is constructed in thick elm boards.
The hundreds of years of use in a Cumbrian pub have produced exceptional colour and patination. The shaped slab ends show considerable natural wear from the many hands running over them. The losses to the timber have become deeply polished illustrating its long life of use.
With a slightly lower seat than the average this illustrates the height of the patrons who would have been frequenting the tavern. This in turn shows the settle is certainly much earlier than many others on the market, certainly the earliest we have found so far.
Its small size and deep barrel back form make this a lovely seating option for a small cottage, or a quaint addition for a tiny nook.
The thick timbers are a lovely feature, showing the maker’s care and hopes the settle would have longevity.
One end panel shows a charming historic wrought iron strapwork repair, just one of many features the settle boasts.
The short back rest is a common feature of settle benches which were placed up to the back wall of a room.
This is without doubt the earliest example of a tavern settle we have come across and is certainly not one to miss the opportunity to own.
Dimensions:-
Width – 141.5cm
Height – 97.8cm
Depth – 46cm
Backrest height – 58.5cm
Seat depth – 35cm
Seat height – 36cm
With honest wear and tear, with is consistent with its considerable age.
Historic repairs.
Signs of ‘mop rot’ to the bottom of the end panels and back boards. This is to be expected.
Historic repair to underside of seat, see images.
Some evidence of historic worm, which is certainly no longer active. This has also been treated for peace of mind.
The condition of the settle is actually one of the desirable qualities it exhibits. Pieces of this age from taverns rarely still exist. It truly is scarce survivor from this period.
