A 19th century Japanese antique Tansu chest.

Constructed in Japanese pine during the Meiji period.

Tansu are a common part of Japanese culture, a practical storage solution for the home. This particular example was used in a indoor / outdoor environment, within a Bonsai potting shed. This has helped to create a wonderfully weathered finish to the Tansu, with deep silvering to the timber and patina to the metalwork.

The Tansu incorporates two traditional sliding doors over five drawers. Each of the drawers is fitted with ornate ironwork handles and decorative lockplates, which are synonymous with Japanese furniture from this period.

The carpenter's makers mark is present to the underside of one drawer as illustrated in the listing image.

Dimensions:-

Height - 79.5cm

Width - 83.2cm

Depth - 35.8cm

There is a single shelf to the interior.

Found in original painted finish, with the deep red and black contrasting against the silvered pine, with iron plates to each of the corners of the carcass.

With age related wear and tear. Some historic splits to the grain within the boards.

The doors slide well.

Evidence of a historic repair to the split to the right hand side.
