A Georgian primitive antique oak tavern settle of small proportions

A wonderful Georgian primitive antique tavern settle of small proportions.

Originally from the Cotswolds, and dating to the 18th century, this is a recent find and fresh to market.

Well constructed fully in solid oak, which has worn back beautifully, showing a long life of use.

Its primitive construction uses hand forged nails, with some having been bent over which has allowed them to develop a great patina. The most obvious ones can be seen on the backrest.

Although diminutive in its size, the maker chose to still use thick timbers throughout,  with even the backboards being formed from hefty slabs of oak. 

Each end panel is of simple form, although there are small charming hand carved details to their front edges. This is the settle’s only real embellishment which is very in keeping with its simple vernacular rural styling.

One other small detail to note is the diamond shaped notched repair to the lower left section of the backrest. This was inset to one of the boards during its long life, and the result of where a natural knot in the timber created a localised weak spot.

The cross support to the bottom appears to be original, which would have formed a footrest.

The settle has developed a good natural deep warm colour throughout.

A stout example of an antique tavern settle from the Georgian period, which bares the weight of two adults with ease. Its size making it ideal to place anywhere within the home. Small enough to be used in a hallway, alternatively perfect to use in a kitchen / dining space.

Age related wear and tear.

Evidence of historic non active woodworm to the very bottom back board. This has additionally been treated for peace of mind.

Small historic drying cracks to the timbers as would be expected. Small loss to the seat panel.
