A charming antique 18th century Welsh panelled oak box settle
Code: 10209
Dimensions:
A mid 18th century Welsh panelled oak box settle, originating from a farm in the North of Wales.
This is a wonderful example of early Georgian craftsmanship, with the hundreds of years of use helping to give the oak a deep patina. The original turned details have become well worn and rounded back.
With well formed scrolled armrests, each showing extensive wear.
The maker’s carved initials can be found to the top centre of the solid oak backrest, just one of the little traces of its past.
This beautifully hand-made settle is of peg construction with some hand forged nails coming into play during its many years of use.
The deep seat panel when raised reveals a useful storage area, ideal for that high traffic area such as a boot room, hall way or kitchen.
At just over 4ft wide this is a great size for any domestic interior.
Dimensions:
Height – 126.5cm
Width – 125.7cm
Depth – 69cm
Backrest height – 87cm
Seat height – 38cm
Seat depth – 39.2cm
A beautiful piece of useable Georgian furniture, with so much character and charm.
Structurally sound and ready to use.
With signs of only very minor historic worm to a small area of the base board and carcass. This is very localised and certainly historic and no longer active. This has been treated for peace of mind.
Given the settle’s age it has avoided pest damaged very well.
Small repair to front right edge of seat panel.
The original hinges which would have allowed the seat panel to lift have been lost during its extensive life. Although this does not affect use, the panel can still be lifted to allow access to the storage area. Small ink stain on seat panel.
Historic repairs to the seat panel underside. This was due to the crack which formed long the length of the panel. The crack has well rounded showing this occurred a long time ago.
Seat bares weight as it should.
Small section of moulding lacking fron bottom centre panel.
No signs of ‘mop rot’.
