A charming antique 17th century English ecclesiastical oak bible box
Code: 10246
Dimensions:
A charming antique English oak bible box, found in original condition.
Dating to the 17th century, with wonderful naïve decorative carving to its front.
The box has developed a nice deep patina, especially to the lid where the original dark stain has worn away to reveal the grain of the oak.
The original hand forged iron hinges are still present and work well.
Traces of paper from the period with handwritten inked inscription still remain in the interior of the box.
Dimensions:-
Width – 72.2cm
Depth – 43cm
Height – 25cm
The box if found in original condition, with age related wear and tear, and considering its age, is in relatively good condition.
A historic repair to the back board is evident, where string has been used to bind together a split which sits below the hinges, this is one of many little details we love to see in pieces of this age.
Small losses to the timber as illustrated, with the lid slightly warped over time.
Lock lacking.
Overall, a wonderful example of ecclesiastical antique boxes from this period.
