An antique rare Scottish 19th century pine whisky barrel stand with oak barrels
Code: 10392
Dimensions:
A scarce 19th century antique Scottish graduated whisky barrel stand, with two oak whisky barrels.
Constructed in pine and still with traces of the original scumble painted finish.
The stand originally would have held three barrels, each of a varying volume. The oak barrel shape and four hoop construction is typical of early whisky cask design. The two most likely uses would have been within a tavern, alternatively in a distillery for experimental work, testing maturation in small batches.
The experimental use within a distillery would be supported by the variation of barrel size. By varying the dimensions slightly this would intern make significant changes to volume to the wood surface area ratio. This information would then be used to calculate how fast the whisky could mature.
After consulting with an expert in the brewing industry they were particularly fascinated by the barrel stand. Their educated opinion would be that most likely the barrels and stand originated from a distillery more so than a tavern. They also highlighted that given the barrels are irregular in size this would mean that they predate 1824. By 1824 all alcohol container size were standardised by the Weights and Measurements Act. Therefore we can date the stand and barrels to the earlier part of the 19th century, which would also tie in with the construction methods and design of the stand.
Certainly now this charming stand and barrels would be the perfect addition to display in a distillery, whisky shop , bar, or even within the home.
The stand is found in lovely original condition with dry painted surface and a well worn patina.
*We do have the third barrel, although this was found in component parts. All iron hoops and staves would appear to be present. This would be included in the sale*
Dimensions:-
Height including barrel - 89cm
Width - 98cm
Depth - 36cm
Small barrel dimensions - 33.5cm diameter x 34.5cm high
Large barrel dimensions - 38cm diameter x 35cm high
With age related wear and tear, the stand is structurally sound and bares weight.
There is some movement to the iron hoops on the barrels, which would be expected considering the oak staves are affected by temperature. As the barrels are empty this also affects the integrity.
Evidence of some minor localised non active historic wood worm to the stand.
Some original scumble paint still present.
