An antique Georgian painted pine tavern settle of small proportions
Code: 10200
Dimensions:
A wonderful petite Georgian painted pine tavern settle.
The centuries of use have taken their toll, resulting in beautiful well worn patina, which has revealed the various layers of paint, and timber surface.
Originally from Cornwall and dating to the late 18th century, this is a recent find and fresh to market.
A particularly interesting detail to point out is the impression now left in the seat, showing where people sat over and over wearing down the timber surface. This illustrates the long period of time the settle saw extensive use.
Raised on simple sleigh supports, and at just over 4ft in width and height, this is a fantastic size to suit any interior.
The small areas of blue paint contrasting against the black really add to the look of the settle.
Dimensions:
Total height – 132cm
Widest point – 125cm
Seat depth – 35cm
Backrest height – 86.8cm
With obvious age related wear and tear, pieces from this period tend to have minor movement and small areas of loss. This is certainly the case for this piece, with small losses, which now are rounded down from extensive use.
The wear and tear to this piece is nothing other than part of the settle’s charm. The way the paint has eroded over time gives a unique and one off aesthetic which truly illustrates its age and tells the story of how it was used.
Minor movement to the back seat board but this is just the ‘bounce’ in the board. It is structurally sound and bares weight as intended.
Some areas of the paint to the backboard have flaked but this is due to the age of the painted surface, some losses as illustrated.
No evidence of ‘mop rot’.
