An antique and uncommon 17th century carved oak tavern box settle
Code: 10166
Dimensions:
An interesting and unusual 17th century north country oak box settle.
The asymmetrical design gives an insight into the settle's use in a North Yorkshire tavern, with the unusual end panel acting as a barrier to doorway draughts.
The hundreds of years of use have produced a dark and beautifully deep patina to the oak. With some historic details such as the maker's initial 'K' still visible to the top centre of the backrest.
The deep seat panel when lifted reveals a large useful storage area, making it an ideal piece for a hallway, bootroom or kitchen.
The back of each thick oak panel has chamfered edges, which even extends to the interior of the base, this is a nice detail which illustrates the quality and craftsmanship of the settle.
The backrest shows signs of the settle being placed near an open fire in the tavern. The arm rest has worn back so nicely from the many hands running over its surface.
Dimensions:
Width - 154cm
Height - 120.5cm
Depth - 51.5cm
Seat height - 43.3cm / seat depth - 46.5cm
Backrest height - 79.5cm
The settle is structually sound and ready to use, with hundreds of years of age related wear and tear, which can only be considered a positive.
There is an historic metal reinforcement strap to the bottom left front corner. Fitted during its long life.
Some very minor movement to the armrest upright joint, however this does not affect its use or durability.
The original hinges are present.
The base boards have been replaced in the 1920s, this has helped to give structural integrity to the settle.
Minor movement to one end of the carved moulding on the backrest. This can easily be reaffixed but we would prefer to leave the piece as found.
Minor loss to back right corner of seat panel.
Evidence of historic non active wood worm, which considering the settle dates to the 1600s this is expected. Please consult the listing images. The settle has been treated for peace of mind.
