A good quality English antique mahogany and pine book / linen press, circa 1880.

Well crafted in solid mahogany and pine, the press sits over two drawers and is raised on simple square legs.

The large screw mechanism incorporates elegant handles and is surmounted with an acorn finial.

Certainly of country house quality, the lack of any ink stains would suggest this would most likely have been used for pressing linen such as napkins. There is comparable example among the collection at the National Trust house Lanhydrock in Cornwall (reference image can be seen online).

Each drawer is fitted with a well turned knob.

To the interior of the lower drawer is an original makers stamp for Johnston’s 290 Oxford street, London.

The timber has a nice warm colour and has developed a good honest patina.
