A simple and wonderful 1940s Irish vernacular hedge chair.

Sourced from County Antrim, this is a true barn find, with a clean revealing  the original red thick varnished finish. Dating to the early 20th century this is a homage to the earlier 19th century examples.

Well constructed with the characteristic interlocking armrests and a particularly thick slab seat. This is a good solid example of Irish country craftsmanship.

This is quite an anomaly as the chair spent a large proportion of its life in storage. This has preserved the painted finish.

The name ‘hedge chair’ comes directly from the so called ‘hedge carpenters’ of Ireland.  The ‘hedge carpenters’ would source their timber directly from the hedge row. With less knowledge than the average trained craftsmen, and fewer tools, they would build simple but beautiful and sturdy chairs for their homes.

These primitive and certainly provincial chairs would utilise whatever timber grew locally, with never one the same as the next.

Without doubt these are well recognised part of Irish social history, and today equally well sought after.

The appeal of this type of vernacular chair is the lack of original finishing.

Sometimes known as  ‘fools’ chair or ‘famine’ chair.

This particular example comes from County Antrim.

The addition of the worm tracks visible to the arm rest and cresting rail only helps to enhance the chair's character, and rustic aesthetic.

Given this is an early 20th century example and constructed from thick timbers, the chair would serve well as an every day seat, that bares weight easily.
