A sought after mid 19th century Scottish Edinburgh pattern armchair, circa 1850.

Well constructed in the traditional Victorian Scottish provincial style in elm and oak. The elegantly swept crane-necked arm rests are supported on well formed turnings which are continuous with the front legs.

This is a wonderful example of one of the most iconic styles of 19th century joined chairs made in Lowland Scotland. Two styles were dominant, ‘Glasgow’ and ‘Edinburgh’.

Edinburgh pattern chairs are known by their backrest design. Having a top rail fitted across the back uprights and extending beyond them. The central backrest is also traditional, with a well rounded design.

This example is particularly large, austere, stout and well constructed. The chair has a particularly upright backrest and is quite imposing.

The ornate turned front legs are comparable to other examples found in Scottish Vernacular Furniture by Bernard D. Cotton, (See pages 186, 192-193). A style of leg which became increasingly popular in Edinburgh pattern chairs throughout Scotland during the 19th century. With them being made for use in parlours or the ‘best room’.

Both timbers used in the construction are well figured, and have developed a good honest colour and a polished patina.

Given the chair’s design, it may suggest a more formal original use, such as within a waiting room, church, school, etc.
