Dimensions:
A charming English 18th century oak bacon back settle of small proportions.
Originally from Somerset.
The high panelled backrest when opened reveals a full height shallow hanging cupboard space with brass hooks.
These types of settle with cupboard backrest are traditionally associated with the hanging and curing of bacon. Given the name 'bacon back'.
A hinged seat panel when lifted reveals a shallow storage cubby, with two further drawers in the base section.
Raised on sledge supports typical of the Devon region.
At just over 1m wide this would be easily accommodated in any size home.
The cupboard space would now work perfectly for storing outdoor clothing, ideal for use in a hallway or boot room.
There are lots of wonderful elements to the piece which really show it's vernacular design. There are unfinished carvings to the inside of the door, which indicate the timber was sourced from other half started projects.
The panelled door can be locked, it is supplied with the key.
