An exceptionally large antique Welsh treen fruit wood Cawl ladle
Code: 10239
Dimensions:
An exceptionally large early 19th century Welsh fruitwood Cawl ladle.
Beautifully hand carved from a single piece of wood, with a particularly deep bowl, long handle and gentle hooked end.
The ladle has developed a stunning well worn patina which showcases the timber's grain and character.
These ladles were used to serve 'Cawl' a type of broth or stew, a Welsh meal which has its origins in the Middle ages.
These vernacular wooden serving spoons would rest on the side of large cooking pots and cauldrons, with the hooked end stopping it falling into the Cawl.
The design of the ladle allows it to be hung up when not in use. A common sight in rural cottages.
