An interesting early 19th century Irish blackthorn walking stick.

Blackthorn walking sticks have a fascinating history, with their use being traced back to ancient times. In Celtic folklore, blackthorn was considered a sacred tree, associated with protection and healing.

The druids and warriors from these times believed the blackthorn sticks sometimes referred to as a Shillelagh, held magical powers which could ward off evil spirits.

Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) is a small deciduous tree which is known for its characteristic dark appearance, dense structure and the thick thorns which run along its limbs.

Walking sticks made in this wonderful timber are sought after, with older examples such as this highly prized for the deep patina they form over many years of use.

The stick measures 89.5cm in length.

A lovely honest walking stick which has nice wear to the dark surface stain. The well rounded thorn heads have worn back over the years and developed a deep polished patina.

Structurally sound.

Minor wear and a few small surface cracks present.
