A lovely example of a Welsh knife sharpening board, primitively constructed in pine, dating to the 19th century.

The knife board, or Bwrdd hogi cyllell, was wall hung when not in use. The storage box to the bottom section would have held an abrasive powder. This would usually be brick dust, emery powder or even fine sand. To sharpen a knife the board would be laid flat, and then the abrasive mixed with water to form a paste on the board. The knife was then drawn back and forth over this paste, grinding and polishing the edge until sharp.

A wonderful vernacular object once widely used in the Welsh home. With each being hand made and individual, due to the timber used and the wear it developed through use. These unique vernacular boards make for great pieces to display within a kitchen, ideal to hold utensils, wooden spoons, candles etc.

This particular board is a good size, and has developed a good pale colour. With nice patina and showing signs of a long life of use. The timber has become concave from the knife and abrasive wearing it down over time.
