A rare 17th century antique apotropaic folk art carved pine game rack
Code: 10443
Dimensions:
An intriguing antique 17th century pine hanging game rack, carved with apotropaic and folk art decoration.
The pine panel is decorated with a trio of large daisy wheels, two vases holding wheat, a crucifix and a small bird.
Wonderfully naive, this is a rare piece to have been embellished with both the ‘daisy wheels’ and folk art depictions.
The daisy wheel is known as a apotropaic protection symbol or more commonly referred to as a ‘witch mark’. These protection symbols were common place within homes in England from around the 16th to the early 19th century.
Used to protect both inhabitants within the home and objects from witches and evil spirits.
The panel itself has a charming undulating top which adds even more detail and interest.
The symbology of the folk art carvings is unknown, although the crucifix has obvious connotations to life and death.
Still with its original hand forged iron hanging hooks.
A truly remarkable and rare find, one for serious collectors of folk art and rare antiques.
Dimensions:-
Width - 95.4cm
Height - 24.3cm

Found in remarkable condition considering the age of the piece. Given that the rack was wall mounted this helped to keep away from potential damage.
With only one of the hanging hooks damaged, the others all remain strong and well fixed.
One of the original hand forged suspension hooks is still present to the reverse of the pine board.
With only minor historic non active wood worm.
