A 19th century antique Welsh carved folk art slate panel
Code: 10445
Dimensions:
A 19th century antique Welsh carved folk art slate panel.
Most likely made to form a section of a fireplace or mantle, the thick slate panel is extensively decorated with concentric circles and the initials B.C.
This type of folk art was crafted by the quarrymen of North Wales during the 19th century. With many comparable examples from the Ogwen Valley in Gwynedd. During their spare time the workers from the quarries would take left over pieces of slate, chosen sometimes for specific colouration. They would then work the stone with tools to produce intricately carved patterns and decorations.
Obviously this type of folk art required a huge amount of time, skill and dedication to produce. Today they are highly collectible and well recognised as part of Welsh culture and heritage.
Various examples were featured in the British Folk Art Exhibition at Tate Britain in 2014, and are also referenced in The Carved Slates of Dyffryn Ogwen by Gwenno Caffell, National Museum of Wales, Cardiff 1983.
An excellent example found in great condition.
The presence of the maker’s initials is a lovely additional detail.
